    Yes, Turin is wearing the golden dragon mask of the Dwarves. The scene (p. 215 illustrated Silmarillion) is the battle near the gates of Nargothrond, and Gwindor, sorely wounded near death, is carried from the battle and saved.


  2. Hi Kevin,

    Since the illustrated Silmarillion [where this painting appears] was published years before The Children of Hurin was published, I wasn’t able to read the episode which describes Gwindor’s maiming. To my knowledge it isn’t mentioned in the longer ‘Narn i Hin Hurin’ account of Turin from Unfinished Tales, either. This is the difficulty with variations on the tales that may or may not be definitive and final, since JRR Tolkien is not there to edit the texts. Thanks for the note.
